There are similarities between long-distance hiking or backpacking and the spiritual life. Elements of one can illustrate the other.

I deeply appreciate images of the Christian spiritual life as a journey, a pilgrimage, a very long hike on the path through life. The spiritual life, and the spiritual disciplines, hold a lot of my interest as I get older. But so does actual physical hiking, so does using muscle and bone to get from here to there while carrying necessities on my back and while seeing, hearing, smelling and feeling the natural world. I deeply appreciate life on the Trail.

This, then, I view as a borderlands area between the two. This is a place in which I hope to explore the overlap between my hiking experiences and my following the Way.

You are most certainly invited along.
